The win was announced by Connie Willis on Saturday 16 June 2012, during the Locus Awards Weekend in Seattle.
China’s fellow finalists were:
Leviathan Wakes, James S. A. Corey
11/22/63, Stephen King
Rule 34, Charles Stross
The Children of the Sky, Vernor Vinge
Although not present at the ceremony, some words from China were read out on stage...
'I'm hugely honoured. Embassytown is something on which I worked very hard, over many years, and I've been very moved by its reception. Even more so because I hope the book is clearly a homage to so much sf I grew up steeped in, to Ursula le Guin, Robert Silverberg, Gene Wolfe, Octavia Butler, Samuel Delany, Michael Moorcock, Brian Aldiss, Joanna Russ, and too many others to name, to all the strange and new wave interplanetary romances and philosophical speculations. Without them, this book wouldn't exist, and without them I would not be me.'
