We get lots of queries from aspiring writers wanting to know what to do with their manuscripts. So inspired by YOU, in a new series for 2015, we are asking some of the UK's top literary agents to share with us what kind of science fiction and fantasy submissions they are on the lookout for. Our first willing victim, I mean, first agent to take part, is Oli Munson from AM Heath. Take it away Oli!
What is your name and where do you come from?
I'm Oli Munson and I'm a literary agent at AM Heath, London's oldest independent literary agency.
Which authors do you look after?
I have a broad list of clients which includes writers of crime, suspense, women's fiction, even some non-fiction...but as this is a Tor Blog I also represent writers of horror, paranormal suspense, steampunk. Basically if the writing is good and the plot has me turning the pages, I'm a fan. Writers I represent in those areas include Arthur C Clarke Award winner Lauren Beukes, Sarah Lotz, Scott K Andrews, S.L. Grey, Alison Littlewood, and the author The Independent called "The high-priestess of British Steampunk" Liesel Schwarz.
Wow. Impressive list! Are you on the lookout for new submissions? What are you looking for?
In terms of what I'm looking for, you could say I like books that have at least a toe-hold in reality. I like the subversion of the world we live in, the what-ifs, the monsters within. I've always found what is real to be so much more terrifying than anything made up. I'm not at all unique in saying I grew up reading Stephen King, Peter Straub, James Herbert and the other big horror and suspense writers of the 80s and 90s. Those books really informed my taste as a reader of genre fiction and what impresses me with those authors is their sheer versatility and willingness to take risks. I like to think my authors do the same.
In a nutshell, I look for authors who take an idea and run with it to the furthest limits of their imagination. People can submit to me via the AM Heath website and I'm always looking for big, high concept novels which take my breath away.
Thanks Oli! You can find out how to submit to AM Heath by visiting their website here. They handily include guidelines such as what to put on your cover letter, a synopsis etc etc.
